Obornik’s miniature sculptures appear to be grotesque anatomical fragments, or partially developed beings. They can be both subtle and alarming. Plus, they can be worn almost like jewelry. Each Body Nugget comes complete with a rare earth magnet so that it can be attached to clothing, metal objects, or even earlobes.
Jan Obornik, born in 1967, is a German based artist whose work deals with the design of contact points and interfaces as a constant motif. After graduating with a degree in product design at the University of Applied Sciences and Art in Hildesheim he began working as a metal designer and sculptor but once got tired of the seriousness of metal and settled to create objects with absolut unserious material: foam is a totally unserious material because it consists of nearly nothing surrounded by very little creating spheres of connected bubbles. In modern life people just look at the surface of things and so Obornik puts a focus on designing these surfaces. The colour of flesh and the application of hair turn every object in the state of a being by just arranging the quality of surface in a special way. His sculptures are a statement about communication. Obornik has shown his pieces in numerous group and solo shows in Europe but also favorites off-space for placing his objects as parasites. He is teaching threedimensional basics and is board member of an association for cultural politics.
