Autumn Leaves is a large-scale book containing Bertolo’s meticulous studies of dessicated, decaying leaves in isolation. That description alone is enough to place it, sight unseen, within the traditions of trompe l’oeil and Momento mori painting. But Autumn Leaves contains another element—the arcs and loops of a child’s uninhibited drawing dancing across the picture plane. While it interrupts the trompe l’oeil effect, disrupting the realism with something like childish modernism, it also deepens the existential thrust of the Momento Mori. Printed by Alredy Toscana. Numbered by hand.

Autumn Leaves

Luca Bertolo's artwork is centered on painting and drawing, considered as sophisticated means for reflection on representation. He has developed his research along the lines formed by the (paradoxical) intersection of a cold and intentional conceptual/ analytic approach to painting with painting itself as the result of a synthetic, warmer, and partially unintentional process. He has recently begun working with other media such as video and writing. In the widest sense, he brings his interest to everything (with its anthropological aesthetic, philosophical value) that a language contains deposited within.
